Fresh Tea from
Sherpa Chai
Growing up in
the high mountains of Nepal, Pemba Sherpa was born an outdoorsmen. As
a child he had to walk three hours to school on a trail from Sengma
to Lukla, Nepal. Working as a guide by age 16, he carried food and
water to the basecamps of Mt. Everest and other high peaks of the
world. Pemba went on to found a trekking agency, Sherpa Ascent
International, where he has led over 40 trips to Nepal.
Over the
course of his adventures, Pemba always had a key ingredient along the
way to keep him warm and energized: chai tea. A daily drink and
time-honored tradition, Sherpa Chai was
passed down among generations. Pemba's mother made it for him to
sustain his treks, and his mother's mother made it for her.
When opening
Sherpa's Restaurant in Boulder, Sherpa Chai was
served by the gallons. Always met with praise on numerous restaurant
reviews, this age-old Sherpa Chai blend of black tea, fresh ginger,
sugar and spices has been a continued hit. In 2013, Pemba decided to
make this cherished recipe available to anyone wishing to partake in
the warm, revitalizing drink.
Sherpa Chai is
brewed exclusively in Boulder, Colorado by Pemba. It is available in Traditional, Sugar-Free
and Decaf
and is sold by the half gallon in sustainable packaging.
Sherpa Chai is not
just about the tea. The company feels a strong connection to the
people of the Himalayan Mountains, where the tea is harvested. Pemba
states that, "Sherpa Chai is as much about the community as it
is about the chai. When we're cooking tea we're thinking about
the people in Nepal who picked it." Sherpa Chai also finds
ways to give back to the communities in Nepal through the development
of a Hydroelectric Power Plant, bringing electricity to those who had
previously gone without.
