This conference-style event brings together local food producers, farmers, retailers, restaurateurs and other local food leaders from throughout the region to share, design and implement solutions to increase local food production and community access to healthier local food.

This will be a great opportunity for all businesses in Colorado's local food economy to learn more about local sourcing, create connections with local businesses working in the local food scene, and share resources and best practices around creating a healthier food system.

We are proud to feature another great partner who is passionate about food and health -

Aleece and her mother Carol own and run The Garden, a restaurant in Denver's Park Hill neighborhood, committed to providing healthy, local, affordable and sustainable foods. After a difficult and devastating family battle with cancer, Aleece went to natural chef school and now prepares a menu that has plenty of options for folks with restricted diets including vegan, gluten-free and raw choices. Aleece and her mother Carol believe that people must take personal responsibility for their own health, starting with the food they put in their bodies.

A message about food from Aleece:
Aleece Raw, Owner and Chef at The Garden

"I wish I could tell you I came from a family of foodies.  That I learned to cook from my grandma with healthy, wholesome recipes passed down through the generations.  But I grew up a wholehearted member of the processed, fast food generation. I ate Big Macs, Velveeta Cheese and Hamburger Helper. I survived four years of college on Top Ramen and Cup O Noodles. I put no other thought into what I ate other than whether it tasted good. And like most Americans, my taste buds were masked under an assault of processed fat, sugar and salt.

I'm happy to say that over the past four years, I have woken up to food. To the importance, joy and deliciousness of whole foods, primarily plant-based...of quality ingredients that have been locally grown in healthy soil without chemicals or synthetic proteins from genetically engineered seeds. To the benefits of nature's own whole food fats, sweeteners and salts that haven't been stripped of fiber, minerals and nutrients."

We continue to strive to work with passionate people who are changing the way people think about food. Keep up the great work Aleece!

Until next time -- May the SOURCE Be with You!

Apple Pie Green Smoothie
~ provided by Chef Aleece

Green smoothies are one of the best ways I've found for folks to add more greens to their diet in an easy, tasty way. You can even sneak them in for kids without them realizing it. :-) And we're the only restaurant I know of in Denver where you can find one.

2 cups spinach, kale or other leafy green

2 apples, quartered (seeds included if you have a high speed             blender - more nutrients!)

1/4 lemon, peeled

3 dates

3 teaspoons raw agave, honey or sweetener of choice

- 1 teaspoon vanilla or 1 inch vanilla bean

- 1-2 cups water

Place all ingredients in high speed blender and blend 1-2 minutes. Garnish with a fresh orange slice and enjoy! Always best fresh, but will store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Making A Difference

Ollin Farms

Thanks to their growing partnership with SOURCE, Ollin Farms has been able to to expand wholesale production from their family farm, resulting in an additional couple acres of active farming (from 6 to 8 active acres).

Owner Mark Guttridge explains, "This year Ollin Farms will be increasing their production of specialty greens, tomatoes and carrots - crops that benefit the most from our nutrient-rich soil.  SOURCE has enabled our small family farm to focus our efficiencies and provide wholesale services in addition to CSAs and farm stands.  Through SOURCE, we are able to start building relationships with local restaurants and grocery stores and provide competitively-priced high quality specialty crops."
